A tough year: The Nucifora family, Ariana, Mark and Elise will mark the first anniversary of cyclone Yasi today.
MARK and Elise Nucifora lost their home and banana farm in cyclone Yasi, just days after discovering they were expecting their first child.

The monster storm flattened their crops and their home had to be demolished after a shed was blown into it. A year later and they are still renting, with designs for their new house yet to go before the council. But they are not alone.

Only about half of the houses demolished when Yasi crossed the coast in February 2011 were rebuilt in time for Christmas, but most residents are now back in their homes or have a move-in date in sight.

During the past year, $12 million of reconstruction work has been completed on Cassowary Coast Regional Council’s assets, only a fraction of the expected $174 million bill to fix the damage.
