Newman to be just a Premier

Campbell Newman says he will sell all business interests and those of his wife Lisa if elected premier

Beseiged Campbell Newman will give up all his and wife Lisa's business interests if elected, in a bid to end what he says is "the most vicious, untrue smear campaign in Australian political history".

Labor has relentlessly campaigned against the Liberal National Party leader and his family over allegations of "dodgy deals" involving companies run by relatives of the couple.

Mr Newman again denied wrongdoing, claiming he had already been open and honest with the electorate. But he said he had decided to shed his family and business assets to challenge the ALP to focus on real issues.

Mr Newman said: "I think it's fair to say the Newman family and Monsour family feel that they have been dragged through hell and back by Anna Bligh. He promised that if he wins the seat of Ashgrove, within 90 days, he would: Relinquish all interests and positions in private companies and/or transfer interests to a blind trust Ensure his self-managed superannuation is invested only in cash or managed index funds; and continue "my long-standing practice" of not personally investing in listed company shares.

His wife will also give up all interests and positions in private companies and/or transfer to a blind trust; and give up all interests in the family-owned Majella Enterprise Unit Trust.
Mrs Newman will also avoid investments in listed companies and not accept any paid public service role while her husband is in office.

"We are going to relinquish basically everything that has caused concern, everything that's been subject to criticism," Mr Newman said. "I want Queenslanders to know they can trust me. I want the people of Ashgrove to know they can trust me and they can have every confidence in voting for me."

Labor will continue the pressure today, however, with Ms Bligh using her official election campaign launch speech to deliver a stinging attack on her rival. She is expected to focus on his time as Brisbane lord mayor and his family's financial dealings.
