Another of the so-called ringleaders of the Bali Nine has lost his final legal appeal against his death sentence.
Indonesia's Supreme Court said Sydney man Myuran Sukumaran had lost his appeal against his sentence for being one of the two organisers of a heroin smuggling operation into Indonesia, the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed. Fellow ringleader Andrew Chan's appeal against the death sentence was rejected last month.

The two men's fate now rests with Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who has the power to grant them clemency. Just last month, Mr Yudhoyono voiced his opposition to giving clemency to prisoners on death row. The Australian government says it will vigorously support clemency for Sukumaran and make representations to the Indonesian government on his behalf.

Myuran and Andy have really turned their lives around... the pressures to do so not withstanding, the fact that they are both actively assisting other inmates to gain skills that will get them employed, counselling against drug use and creating a life for themselves in the jail where they will spend the rest of their lives must count for something. To cut their lives short by execution serves no purpose and denies the inmate community the opportunity to learn from them and their mistakes. That they ignored it, attests to and reinforces studies done that the Death Penalty is not a deterrent. Nor are drug traffickers the only reason people take drugs... abusive childhoods, boredom, peer pressure, parental example all contibute to the drug problem. We don't shoot the parents do we?
ReplyDeletePlease take into account the way these 2 young men are today and contact your politicians to urge them to act to stop this senseless "state sanctioned murder" I volunteer teach at Kerobokan Jail and see regularly the good work they do and the changes they have made in their lives. When a criminal rehabilitates as we ask them to do, we need to support them when they accomplish that rehabilitation. Please support these young men. They could be your sons.
